CHAPTER FIVE

How Superheroes Made Their Way into the World of Fairy Tales: The Appeal of Cooperation and Collective Action from the Greek Myths to the Grimms’ Tales and Beyond

The attempts to distinguish myth from folktale in current usage are a methodological nightmare: this has only a limited bearing on the ancient usage of the Greek term mythos, which tends to mean simply a tale, without any certain connotation of its truth. Partly, our perspectives have evolved historically, with nineteenth-century notions of folklore and folktale suggesting primitive survival and some twentieth-century notions of myth suggesting an element of genuine belief; this converges, up to a point, with the idea of myth as largely confined to creation and early etiological stories, but it is hardly practical to press such distinctions,. In this case, no definition at all is probably less misleading than one so loaded with qualification as to be practically useless.
